PROJECT GREEN HEARTS
Who we are
Project Green Hearts is an initiative started by Rootbox. We aim to reach out to NGOs and communities to educate them about sustainable living. The saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. But teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” is a phrase that we all have heard enough times in our lifetime. But how many of us actually live by it? With your help, we can provide NGOs with at least a portion, if not all of their dietary requirements, and give them an opportunity to possibly make an income.
How it’s done
We run a workshop directly from the NGOs premises and teach the children and community members how to grow their own food. We will set up a vegetable patch if the space permits. Alternatively, should there not be space, we will provide planter boxes. We will provide them with nutrient rich soil, organic seeds and basic gardening supplies.
What they will learn:
- How to prep the soil
- Sow their own seeds
- Efficient watering methods
- How to care for their plants
- How to harvest correctly
- Crop rotation
Why Project Green Hearts is so important
According to global organization UNICEF, 11% of deaths in children under the age of 5 are malnutrition related. 15% of infants are born with a low birth weight due to their mothers not having access to nutrient rich foods. These are all South African statistics.
What we will achieve together:
- Fight starvation and malnutrition.
- Help feed an orphanage or community. Not only for a meal, but on an ongoing basis with nutrient rich fruit and vegetables.
- Give poverty stricken communities a sense of purpose and self-worth.
- Educate and create awareness about our environment and how we can utilize it for the better good.
What happens after the workshop?
We will conduct regular site visits and document the progress. We engage with the community and provide them with solutions for any challenges they might experience with their new food source. We encourage you to join us and experience the difference your organization can make in their lives.
