Jelly Melon

The Jelly Melon - also known as the African Horned Cucumber - is one of our very own hidden treasures.

Native to the Kalahari Desert, it is surprising that the Jelly Melon has not been commercialized in South Africa, considering its high nutritional value and great taste. In fact, the biggest cultivator of the Jelly Melon is New Zealand.  Perhaps that’s why they play such great rugby.

If you’ve never seen one before, it could be described as the very unlikely offspring of porcupine and a pawpaw*

Planting:

  • The Jelly Melon is a sun lover, so make sure it has good exposure to sunshine and a good support structure to promote climbing.
  • Sow seeds about ½ and inch deep about 30cm apart in mid Spring.
  • Germination typically happens in 3 weeks. Keep soil moist for the seeds.
  •  As the plant develops a strong rooting system, start watering by soaking the soil.
  • Allow the soil to dry between watering.
  •  Decrease watering as the fruit ripens to improve the flavor.
  • Harvest when the skin turns yellow.
  • You can expect a combination of banana, cucumber and melon flavors when you take a bite into the soft jelly like inside.
