Roma Tomato

Have you ever wondered how the Italians make the best pasta? The secret is all in the sauce!

Roma tomatoes are a very pulpy fruit. Not the best for salads or sarmies, but if you want to make the perfect sauce or puree, then Roma’s are second to none. This is a great substitute for your conventional store-bought tomato sauce which mainly consists of overcooked, mass-produced tomatoes, water and a large amount of high-fructose corn syrup. Not to mention all the preservatives and up to 4grams of sugar in just 1 teaspoon.

This is a great strain for kids as they tend to grow easier than most other types.

Planting:

  • Sow 40-60cm apart from each other in a well fertilized soil.
  • Make sure they receive at least 8 hours of sun a day.

*Rootbox Culinary tip – encourage your kids to make a super easy organic tomato sauce with their freshly picked Roma tomatoes.

Ingredients:

500g tomatoes

3 tbsp olive oil

2 or 3 cloves of crushed garlic

2 tsp apple cider vinegar (high source of vitamin A, C, B6 and a handful of other minerals)

1/8 tsp of sea salt

2 tbsp of honey or xylitol

1/8 tsp of paprika

Directions:

  1. Strain the tomatoes thoroughly (the more water in the tomatoes, the runnier your sauce will be).
  2. Add all the ingredients into a processor or blender.
  3. Store in a mason jar in the fridge for 1 week. Use a 500ml jar so that it is not filled to the top. The emptier the space is on the top then the longer it will keep. Avoid storing in a  plastic container.
